A DISCUSSION-BOARD-RELATED PAGE GEARED TOWARD BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH CLASSMATES
CULTIVATING HONEST REFLECTIONS IN CONNECTION WITH TEXTBOOK READING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES:
|
It has become clear to me that I need to absorb myself in the content of this course if I truly want to possess the necessary skills for becoming an effective reading teacher; after reading chapter one and chapter two in the textbook I'm quite sure that I have never diligently and methodically thought through my philosophy in regard to how I can best engage students with reading instruction. In 2010 I taught some reading to fifth graders for about a semester in Florida; however, I did not complete the experience with a sense of being a successful language arts teacher. Unlike the scenario with Miss Brooke who is clearly an innovative and effective teacher, I know that I made more mistakes as a teacher than I had successes (perhaps I'm being too hard on myself). Some of my best years in the classroom were as a substitute teacher in Clare and Isabella Counties because I focused more on the relationships with the students than on the inevitably complex demands which today's profession places on teachers. It is kind of embarrassing to admit that full-time teaching for me was very painful in light of what I felt was an immense failure. Consequently, the bottom line for me is that all of my struggles in the past, as a professional educator, only make me stronger if I choose to be vulnerable in admitting that I can persevere in striving to learn from my mistakes and to overcome that which made classroom teaching so difficult for me. PLEASE VISIT THE GLOGSTER page I posted in connection with the content from Week 01 of EDU 603 (it is becoming an eye-opening experience for me as I prepare for whatever may unfold in my career in the years ahead)!
